Accredited Workplace Mediation Certificate (OCN)

• To understand the key principles of mediation and the benefits of this approach in the workplace.
• To practice key skills and essential strategies of effective mediators by using various case studies and role play scenarios. All case studies and role plays will be practiced in a safe learning environment with constructive feedback from the trainer.
• To give delegates a structured process with which to resolve a variety of workplace conflicts.
• To discuss best practice and to apply this to mediation sessions.
• To develop the confidence to work as an in-house or consultant mediator.

The principles of mediation:

• The theory and practice of organisational conflict, including the psychology of conflict and a discussion on delegates’ own conflict resolution styles.
• Mediation as a voluntary, confidential and self-determining process and the challenges of these key mediation principles.
• The mediator as impartial facilitator.
• How to manage prejudice and bias in mediation.

The mediation process:

• How to explain mediation to HR and other stakeholders within an organisation.
• How to prepare the parties to attend mediation.
• How to manage the distinct stages of the facilitative mediation model and apply these in practice.
• How to support the parties to move from positions to needs.
• The follow-up procedures post-mediation.

Mediation practice:

• How to use the techniques and skills of a mediator: active listening, empathy, summarising, questioning and reframing.
• How to manage “challenging” behaviours in mediation session.
• How to facilitate the individual and joint mediation meetings.
• How to support the parties in the problem-solving process.
• How to write a final mediation agreement or action plan.

Pre-course activities: To aid delegates in their learning and to prepare them for the course, delegates are asked to complete a pre-course questionnaire and engage in pre-course reading.

During the course: To enhance a self-reflective mediation practice, delegates are required to complete a self-reflective mediation journal.

Post-course: To be eligible for accreditation with the OCN, delegates are required to complete a short written assignment relating to mediation.

The course combines trainer input, discussion and various role plays to explore effective mediation techniques. The course is highly interactive and experiential, with a focus on developing practical mediation skills to enable delegates to formally work as in-house or consultant workplace mediators within any type of organisation.
